Layers of laminate

Laminate is generally made up of a combination of wood-based materials, typically configured into four layers. The backing layer balances the plant, keeping it straight. This layer also seals for moisture protection. Next comes the high-density core layer, which makes up the bulk of the plank. This gives it strength and stability. Then comes the decorative layer, which features a printed design of just about anything. Then comes the top wear layer, which adds luster and surface protection.

Laminate vs. hardwood

Laminate vs. Hardwood

Hardwood flooring is highly sought after for the beauty and value it adds to a home’s design. Newer homes being constructed and sold at lower price points are capturing that beauty in laminate flooring, which mimics wood’s warm, natural character. These two types of flooring may look identical in many ways, but how do they stack up against one another?

Hardwood is made from harvested trees. It's susceptible to scratching, moisture damage, and wear, but this can all add to its character. It can be refinished to remove imperfections, and it can last for decades.

Laminate, on the other hand, is made from composite wood materials. This makes it much cheaper to manufacture and install. It's scratch-resistant, moisture-resistant, and wear-resistant, and it snaps together for easy installation. While it's easy to clean, it's not easy to repair.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of laminate is its ability to affordably replicate any wood species or color in a variety of styles, in addition to stone or tile. At Boyle's Flooring, you'll find laminate in smooth and hand-scraped texturing, and in wide or thin planks.
